The hardness of NM 500 vs mild steel hot rolled


    
    NM 500 is a high strength and abrasion resistant steel that may be an ideal choice when compared to mild steel hot rolled. It offers outstanding hardness and strength while maintaining excellent formability and weldability.
    
    Mild steel hot rolled has been in use for a long time and is a material of choice for many engineering and construction projects. It has good formability and weldability and is relatively inexpensive.
    
    NM 500, on the other hand, is a very hard and wear-resistant steel. It is usually chosen for parts and components which are exposed to heavy wear and tear for extended periods of time and need to be robust enough to stand up to the elements. NM 500 also has good formability and weldability and can be heated treated to further increase its hardness.
    
    The hardness of NM 500 is typically greater than that of mild steel hot rolled. This is due to its high alloying content and manufacturing process which results in a structure consisting of high hardness values with low ductility and toughness. The hardness of NM 500 has been measured in the range of 470–540 HBW. In comparison, mild steel hot rolled has been measured in the range of 238–359 HBW.
    
    It's important to note that while NM 500 is significantly harder than mild steel hot rolled, that does not make it ideal for every application. For example, in applications which require a high degree of formability, NM 500 may be too brittle and hard to manipulate into a desired shape. Therefore, it's wise to consider all the potential applications carefully in order to choose the most suitable steel for the task.
