    ASTM A7 – ASTM A7 was the first steel alloy developed in the early 19th century and its primary component was carbon. It was used as a structural material due to its strength and high tensile strength. It had a high coefficient of elasticity and was initially used to make bridges, buildings, and railroad tracks. It eventually found a place in the automotive industry as well and was used to make automobile chassis. It is still used today occasionally in applications where higher strength and rigidity are required, such as construction equipment and heavy-duty cranes. It is extremely ductile and can be easily welded and formed. Its strength-to-weight ratio is excellent, making it an ideal choice for lightweight applications.
    
    HARDOX 400 is an abrasion resistant steel developed by SSAB (Swedish Steel Corporation) in the 1990s. It provides excellent resistance to wear and has a resistant surface hardness in excess of 400 Brinell. This makes it ideal for applications where strong and durable parts are needed, such as for wheel loaders, drilling machines, excavators, and crushers. It is also commonly used for chutes, hoppers, conveyor systems, and other components exposed to wear. Its high fatigue and impact strength also make it suitable for armor plate and other protective structures.
    
    For application needing strength and wear resistance, it is common to see HARDOX 400 being used in an equivalent capacity as ASTM A7. The additional features that make HARDOX 400 so ideal such as its ability to handle higher temperatures and improved resistance to corrosive environments make it an attractive alternative to ASTM A7. It is important to note, however, that HARDOX 400 is much more expensive than ASTM A7 and so should only be considered for applications where the additional characteristics are essential.
