Which material is NM400 steel equivalent

NM400 steel is a high-abrasion-resistant steel. It is a wear-resistant steel grade that has three times the strength of ordinary carbon steel and is much more resilient than regular low-carbon steel. It has excellent weldability, making it a good choice for applications with heavy wear conditions.

NM400 steel is suitable for applications requiring high wear resistance. It is widely used in the mining, construction and engineering industries. It has excellent mechanical properties and offers superior wear resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance. This makes it a suitable choice for use in heavy-duty equipment and industrial machinery.

NM400 steel is also known as Hardox 40, or HARDOX 400, due to its higher hardness rating. The hardness of the steel is measured in Brinell units, with NM400 steel having a rating of around 430 Brinell. This is significantly higher than the hardness ratings of equivalent carbon steel grades, such as A36.

The most popular equivalent of NM400 steel is the ASTM A514 grade. This grade is made from high-strength alloy steel and combines excellent wear resistance with superior weldability and fatigue strength. The principles of ASTM A514 grade are similar to those of NM400. Both are suitable for applications where metal parts are frequently exposed to wear and tear, as they offer superior resistance to abrasion, corrosion and fatigue.

NM400 steel is used in a wide range of applications, including crane booms, earthmoving buckets and wear liners in the construction and mining sectors, as well as conveyor rollers, Jaw crusher and bucket wear parts in the quarrying industry. It is also used to make lids and containers that are exposed to wear conditions, such as oil and gas tanks.

NM400 steel offers excellent weldability, making it suitable for fabrication purposes. It can be welded with all common welding processes, including gas, arc and laser welding. The steel should be preheated to around 300°C when welding with higher strength electrodes. Post-weld heat treatment is often recommended to restore the correct microstructure and mechanical characteristics of the welded joint.

NM400 high-abrasion-resistant steel provides many advantages over traditional carbon steel grades. It offers superior wear resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance due to its high hardenability and toughness. It is also weldable and offers excellent mechanical properties, making it a good choice for use in heavy-duty and industrial applications.
