    NM500 is an extra-high-strength wear-resistant steel with a typical hardness of 500 HBW. It is highly reliable for use in abrasive environments and provides superior wear resistance performance compared to other materials. Here we compare the performance of NM500 to other popular wear-resistant materials.
    
    The most popular wear-resistant material, after NM500 steel, is carbide based wear plates. Carbide plates are composed of carbide particles that are cast and sintered to bond them together. The resulting material has a strong wear resistance and can withstand much higher temperatures compared to other popular wear-resistant materials. The downside of carbide is that it is expensive and susceptible to fracture if not correctly machined.
    
    Another common wear-resistant material is chromium carbide overlay steel. It offers high-strength and corrosion resistance similar to that of NM500 steel, in addition to excellent impact resistance. Despite its advantages, chromium carbide overlay steel is prone to delamination and crack propagation if exposed to thermal shock.
    
    Ceramic-reinforced wear plates, used in industries such as the cement industry, provide the most wear resistance of all wear-resistant materials. Ceramic-reinforced wear plates are strong and have a much higher resistance to high temperatures compared to NM500 and other wear-resistant materials. Their disadvantage is that they need to be carefully machined to ensure that they withstand thermal shock.
    
    Manganese-based alloys, such as austenitic manganese steel, are both wear-resistant and formable. This material is often used for its formability in many components where wear resistance is important. The downside is that it has poor corrosion resistance and is prone to work hardening.
    
    The wear resistance of NM500 steel is very high compared to other wear-resistant materials. It can cost up to two and a half times more than other wear-resistant materials, but it provides superior hardness and wear resistance, greater impact strength, and superior corrosion resistance.
