NM500 plate equivalent

- A500 Structural Carbon Steel

A500 structural carbon steel is a standard alloy used primarily for construction projects requiring significant strength and durability. It is one of the most commonly used alloys in the steel industry and is widely used in bridges, buildings, shipping containers and many other applications.

A500 structural steel is a type of carbon steel that meets the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) A500 standard. ASTM A500 is a technical specification that covers cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel square and rectangular tubing used in construction and structural applications. A500 structural steel is composed primarily of iron and carbon, with elements such as manganese, sulfur and phosphorus added to enhance strength and tensile strength.

A500 structural steel has a high tensile strength ranging between 310 to 550 MPa and a yield strength of up to 355 MPa. It has excellent weldability, toughness and strength and is suitable for use in both cold and warm-formed applications. Additionally, A500 steel has higher levels of corrosion resistance than low carbon steels. In addition to its welding properties, A500 structural steel exhibits exceptional impact resistance, formability and high-temperature performance.

The most common grade of A500 structural steel is the A500 Grade B. Grade B steel is distinguished from other A500 grades by its chemical composition and specified mechanical properties. It is composed of a maximum amount of 0.26 carbon, manganese up to 1.35, phosphorus of 0.035, sulfur of 0.04, silicon of 0.3 and copper of 0.25. A500 Grade B has an ultimate tensile strength of 62,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 46,000 psi.

The equivalent A500 Grade B steel to an NM500 plates is ASTM A572 Grade 50. This is an excellent high strength low alloy steel that is used in bridge and structural applications. The yield strength of ASTM A572 Grade 50 is 50,000 psi and it has an ultimate tensile strength of 65,000 psi. It also has higher levels of corrosion resistance than A500 grade B and a greater resistance to wear and tear.

Overall, A500 structural carbon steel is an excellent material for use in bridges and structural applications due to its strength, durability, weldability and excellent formability. Its resistance to corrosion and wear and tear makes it a suitable material for use in many applications. The equivalent A500 Grade B steel to an NM500 plate is ASTM A572 Grade 50, an excellent high strength low alloy steel.
