NM450 Grade equivalent


    
    Steel is typically graded depending on its chemical composition and physical properties. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has defined a number of grades of steel which are designated by the four-digit number preceded by the letter “X” which denotes a high-strength, low-alloy steel. The most commonly used high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel is AISI X450 grade, which is a specialized grade that is extremely versatile and can be formed and welded into many shapes with the strength and durability required in many different industrial applications.
    
    X450 grade is a chromium-alloyed low-alloy steel containing between 0.5 to 1.5 percent chromium, 0.4 percent manganese, 0.4 percent silicon and less than 0.5 percent carbon. It exhibits excellent ductility and formability, as well as great weldability, toughness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. It is also non-magnetic and resistant to scaling.
    
    X450 steel boasts an ultimate tensile strength of 600-790 Mpa and a minimum yield strength of 450-570 Mpa, while exhibiting excellent hardness on the Brinell scale ranging from 140 to 180. It can be hardened by heat-treating where a higher strength is desired.
    
    Key uses ofX450 grade steel include the fabrication of automotive chassis and components, farm equipment, industrial machinery, construction equipment, storage tanks and pressure vessels, roller and conveyor bearings, electrical hardware and appliances, and exhaust systems. It is also used in the manufacture of high-pressure flanges, fittings, valves, and blades.
