NM vs ar500

-

NM and AR500 steel are both popular materials used in a variety of applications. Both have high levels of resistance to abrasion and wear and tear, which makes them ideal for use in construction and manufacturing, in places where durability and strength are required. However, there are some distinct differences between the two products.

NM is a trademarked name for a type of abrasion-resistant steel produced by Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB. Developed in the 1970s, NM steel is heat-treated and quenched, which gives it significantly higher hardness and strength than normal steel. Thanks to its unique composition, NM also offers excellent weldability, bending capabilities and formability, making it suitable for various applications, including truck bodies and containers, conveyors and agricultural machinery, and even some large-scale construction projects.

AR500 steel, on the other hand, is a type of abrasion-resistant steel produced by the US-based company Allegheny Technologies. Unlike NM, which is heat-treated and quenched, AR500 steel is cold-rolled and tempered, so it achieves its durability and strength primarily through its heat treatment rather than composition. As such, it is generally more affordable than NM, while still providing comparable wear resistance.

The main difference between NM and AR500 steel lies in their composition. NM is composed of a combination of high-alloy steels, while AR500 is made with cold-rolled carbon steel. As a result, NM offers a higher level of strength and wear-resistance than AR500, but at the cost of formability and weldability. On the other hand, AR500 offers a noticeably lower level of abrasion and wear protection than NM, but has much better formability and weldability, making it an excellent choice for certain applications.

Ultimately, deciding between NM and AR500 steel will depend on the application and the specific requirements. NM is typically more expensive and offers higher resistance to wear and tear, so it’s ideal for projects where durability and strength are paramount. AR500 is less expensive and offers a more malleable form of steel, making it ideal for projects where formability and weldability are more important than wear-resistance.
