What is en NM500 equivalent steel material
NM500 steel is a high strength abrasion-resistant steel plate which is mostly used for high wear-resistant applications in construction and engineering. It has good mechanical properties, excellent welding characteristics and unique characteristics. However, NM500 steel is not readily available in the market. Therefore, the need to look for an equivalent material arises.
The most commonly used equivalent material to NM500 is Abrasion Resistant Steel 500 (AR500). It is a wear-resistant steel grade which provides high strength and hardness after heat treatment and air cooled cooling, making it abrasion resistant as well. It has a minimum yield strength of 500MPa, which gives it good formability, weldability and machinability, while also providing excellent strength and hardness properties over a wide range of temperature and stress range. The high hardness level of AR500 steel makes it suitable for high-wear applications, particularly those involving sliding contact.
Other commonly used equivalents to NM500 steel are Hadfield steel, also known as X120Mn12; Rustalloy; and Abrex 500.
Hadfield steel is an abrasion-resistant grade steel and is a manganese steel with an excellent work hardening capability that gives it a very high level of toughness and hardness. It is highly resistant to all forms of wear, including abrasion and impact, and has a much higher tensile strength than normal steel grades, giving it superior properties in abrasion resistance applications. It has a minimum yield strength of 500MPa and hardness up to 750Br.
Rustalloy is a premium quality steel, specially formulated for corrosion and temperature resistance. It has excellent corrosion, erosion and oxidation resistance and although it is better suited for resistance to a variety of chemical environments, it is suitable for use in wet areas. It has good mechanical strength and weldability and is suitable for high wear-resistant applications. It has a minimum yield strength of 500MPa and a tensile strength of 700MPa.
Finally, Abrex 500 is an abrasion resistant steel specifically formulated to provide excellent resistance to abrasion and erosion while providing good impact and fatigue properties. It is available in several forms, including sheets, pipes, bars and plates and can be welded, machined and heat treated in a variety of alloy combinations. It is suitable for a wide range of heavy-duty applications, with a minimum yield strength of 500MPa, while providing good fatigue properties.
In conclusion, NM500 is a high strength abrasion-resistant steel which is commonly used in high wear-resistant applications. However, it is not readily available in the market, so there is the need to look for an equivalent material. There are various equivalents materials to NM500, both steel and non-steel, such as Hadfield steel, Rustalloy and Abrex 500 which provide good strength and hardness properties and excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance.
