about Tools Used for Networking

When it comes to tinkering with and maintaining networks, there are a lot of tools and devices at a network engineer’s disposal. Some of them can be used to monitor networks, track performance, and diagnose issues, while others can be used to configure, protect, and control them. While some of these tools are specific to network engineers and administrators, many of them are also applicable to general IT users. In order to fully understand what these tools are, it’s important to be familiar with how they work.

Network Mapping. A major part of properly managing a network is knowing what’s connected to it and how everything fits together. Network mapping is the process of creating a map of a network and its components, and includes such tasks as discovering network devices, tracking network traffic, and isolating network problems. To do this, network mapping tools are used to visually identify devices, examine network topology, and design intricate networks. Common examples of mapping tools include network monitoring tools, network discovery tools, and network inventory tools. Network mapping data is then used to create a chart or schematic of a network’s topology.

Network Analyzers. Network analyzers are sophisticated instruments used to inspect the performance of a network. These tools are capable of testing response times, throughputs, latency, packet jitter, and speed. They can also track network traffic, detect rogue devices, detect network congestion, and benchmark link quality. Many network analyzers come equipped with reporting features and visualization tools to help network engineers analyze and report results quickly and accurately. Common examples of network analyzers include packet sniffers, traffic shapers, network testers, and protocol analyzers.

Network Monitor. Network monitoring tools are used to provide real-time monitoring of a network’s performance and traffic levels. They are capable of displaying bandwidth use, detecting problems, and sending out alerts in the event of a problem. They are also useful for identifying usage patterns over time, proactively fixing problems, and establishing efficient network policies. Common examples of network monitoring tools include network performance monitors, traffic meters, and network scanners.

Network Configurators. Network configurators make it easy to configure network settings, such as IP addresses, DNS settings, and routing tables. Some configurators are task-oriented, providing specific configuration templates for specific tasks, while others are more general-purpose and allow for more detailed configuration. Network configurators automate the process of network configuration, enabling networks to be deployed faster and with fewer errors. Common examples of network configurators include network setup wizards, network appliances, and network controllers.

Network Security. Network security tools are used to identify and prevent malicious traffic, detect intrusions, and protect confidential data. They do this by scanning for malicious traffic, controlling access to networks and systems, providing antivirus protection, monitoring user activities, and detecting unknown threats. Common examples of network security tools include firewalls, antivirus programs, and intrusion detection systems.

By understanding the various tools and devices used for network maintenance and development, network engineers and administrators can ensure that their networks are secure and running at optimum speed and performance. Proper use of the tools, combined with regular network performance reviews and maintenance, can greatly reduce the chances of network downtime and loss of confidential data.
