NM450 bend radius vs a 36 steel plate

Steel plate, or otherwise known as a flat-rolled product, is used by countless industries due to its strength and versatility. Commonly used in the fabrication of bridges, ships, automobiles, machinery parts and tools, steel plates are a staple material to the industrial world. As such, the grade, thickness, and shape of the steel plate are all important considerations when choosing the appropriate steel components for any given application.

In terms of its bending capabilities, the bend radius of a steel plate is an important measurement as it is a key determinant in the strength of the plate and the results that can be achieved with its bending. The bend radius is the minimum radius along the bend surface when bending occurs. The larger the bend radius, the less stress on the plate, and thus better results can be achieved with its bent form. The most commonly used steel plate in bending applications is A36 plate, which is most commonly found in the construction of bridges and buildings.

In terms of A36 steel plate, the bend radii typically range between 2-2.5 times the thickness of the plate. For example, a 1” thick A36 steel plate should have a minimum bend radius of 2-2.5”. It’s important to note that the bend radius of the A36 plate may slightly decrease or increase in accordance with the grade and the surface of the plate. For example, the bend radius of quenched and tempered steel plate or high-strength steel plate will vary from the A36 plate bend radius.

When compared to NM450 steel plate, its bend radius is generally larger than that of the A36 plate. The NM450 plate has an improved yield strength, abrasion resistance, and tensile strength when compared to the A36 grade. This means that the NM450 plate does not require as much stress on the surface of the bent metal, thereby allowing for larger bend radii. Typical bend radii for the NM450 steel plate range between 3-4”. As with the A36 plate, the NM450 bend radius may slightly increase or decrease depending on the grade and surface of the plate.

Purchasing the correct steel plate for the application is of utmost importance. A36 plate is the most common grade used in bending applications due to its available strength and form-ability. NM450 plate is a great choice for an application where the bend radius needs to be larger due to its improved strength and abrasion resistance properties. Understanding the bend radii for both A36 and NM450 steel plate will allow for informed decision-making when selecting the correct steel plate.
