NM 500 equivalent equivalent ASME material


    
    The NM 500 steel plate is a modern high strength and abrasion resistant steel plate from Swedish-based SSAB. This quenched and tempered steel meets or exceeds the European standard for hardness, and provides excellent strength and wear properties for a variety of applications. NM 500 also comes with a 10-year guarantee, making it one of the best steel plates available on the market. On the other hand, ASME A588/A588M is an American standard developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). This standard is particularly useful in environments where corrosion resistance is important, primarily in pressure vessels and piping. It features steel alloy compositions that yield high strength, corrosion resistance, and exceptional durability.
    
    While NM 500 and A588/A588M hold many similar properties, they are not direct equivalents of each other in terms of chemical analysis, mechanical properties, and metallurgical behavior. NM 500 is a quenched and tempered steel with a hardness of 500HBW, whereas A588/A588M includes austenitic steels that are convenient for welding, whereas NM 500 is not weldable. Additionally, NM 500 has a much tighter tolerance from SSAB than what is available from ASME. These and other material differences, such as inclusion of additional elements, set these two materials as non-equivalent, as there is no true equivalent of NM 500 on the American side.
    
    However, there are alternative solutions to NM 500 should an equivalent or similar material be needed. For example, AR400F, AR450F and AR500F steel obtain the strength, hardness and wear resistance of NM 500T but are all produced using A514 steel, which is approved by many American industrial organizations. This steel is cleaner than NM 500 and can be heated, formed and machined if needed. It also comes with a slightly lower Guaran-Tee as well as a lower price tag.
    
    In summary, NM 500 and A588/A588M can offer some similarities and overlap in their capabilities, but they cannot truly be considered equals. For materials requiring similar properties to NM 500, AR400F, AR450F, or AR500F may be a viable alternative and should be discussed in more detail with the material experts at SSAB or the American material suppliers.
    
    Regardless of which one is chosen, the material should be properly specified for the application and environment to ensure long-term performance.
