NM450 steel equivalent
discussing stainless steelStainless steel is one of the most popular materials used in industrial and home applications. It is renowned for being durable, corrosion-resistant and low-maintenance, but nearly all of its impressive qualities are due to the vast number of alloys that are used to make it. Although an estimated 150 different alloys exist, they all have one thing in common: the main component of stainless steel is an element called chromium. These alloys can be easily adapted to meet the demands of almost any application, which is why stainless steel is often the preferred material for industrial grade hardware.
NM 450 is a trademark owned by Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB, which created this high-grade stainless alloy specifically for ballistic protection. It belongs to a category of speciality steels known as high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, which consists of steels with improved mechanical properties, increased strength and improved corrosion resistance. This is achieved by adding additional elements to the alloy (in this case, molybdenum, nickel, nitrogen, and cerium). NM 450 is unique in that its combination of properties makes it a very tough material that is able to withstand more wear and tear than most stainless steels.
The composition of NM 450 can be seen in its material composition chart. Chromium, as mentioned earlier, takes up the majority of the alloy at 12%. The next largest component is molybdenum at 0,3%. The other elements that make up NM 450 are nickel (1,5%), nitrogen (0,04%), and cerium (0,03%). The remaining components of the alloy are present in trace amounts.
NM 450 is popular in industry applications due to its combination of hardiness and corrosion resistance. It is often used in products such as mining equipment and ballistic plates to stand up to extreme wear and tear while also standing up to harsh outdoor conditions. NM 450 is also used as a structural component due to its property of being difficult to form with traditional methods. It can be welded without issue, and its impressive strength means it can be used for heavy-duty construction and for a variety of other applications.
In comparison to other stainless steels, NM 450 is a very specialised alloy, with several unique characteristics. This makes it an invaluable material for extreme applications, and has earned the nickname "the bulletproof steel." NM 450 may not be the best overall stainless steel, but it excels at certain conditions that make it extremely valuable in certain industries.
