NM450 equivalent grades

NM450 steel is an ultra-high-strength steel alloy with a yield strength of 450 ksi (3,101 MPa). It is known for its exceptional durability and wear resistance.

NM450 steel is a complex alloy composed of iron, carbon, and other alloying elements including chromium, molybdenum, nickel, manganese, and vanadium. It is produced in hot-rolled form and can be cold-worked to improve the surface finish of the product. The alloy is highly corrosion-resistant, making it suitable for use in a wide variety of industries and applications.

The material is ideal for many generative manufacturing applications such as laser sintering and injection molding as well as for parts used in the aerospace and automotive industries. It also finds use in medical devices and tools.

NM450 steel has a tensile strength of 900 MPa (3,800 MPa). It has the capacity to perform exceptionally under dynamic and static loading conditions. The low alloy formation enables the steel to have higher impact strength, excellent wear resistance, and good ductility.

Some of the major advantages of this steel are its excellent fatigue properties, elevated temperature strength, and its weldability. NM450 steel has been proven to endure temperatures as high as 500°F (260°C) without losing any of its essential strength or hardness. It also has good galling and abrasion resistance.

While there is no true equivalent to NM450 steel, the closest is a grade called ARP 5540 which exhibits similar properties. ARP 5540 is an alloy steel made up of a variety of elements including chrome, manganese, nickel, molybdenum, and phosphorus with a yield strength of up to 450 ksi. It is produced in hot-rolled form for welding, thin-walled structural components, as well as for high temperature applications. ARP 5540 is a more accessible alternative to NM450 steel, but it does not offer some of the same exceptional qualities that the NM450 steel does.

NM450 steel is an incredibly strong, wear-resistant material that has a wide range of applications and benefits. Its high yield strength and tough, durable construction make it ideal for use in aerospace and automotive industries, generative manufacturing and medical devices. Though there is no true equivalent material, ARP 5540 steel is a good alternative, though it lacks some of the exceptional benefits of NM450.
